Agnes Hamilton

Director and Founder, Violin Teacher

Director

Violin/Viola

Agnes started her musical education at the age of 4 under her mother’s violin tuition on their houseboat in Shoreham by Sea, West Sussex UK.

Showing a great passion for musicianship at a young age, she gained a music scholarship in 1997 and was soon leading school orchestras and quartets. Agnes made her concert debut at the age of nine, performing the Bach A minor concerto with orchestra.

Having started the piano at 5 years old, at the age of 9 she also began Harpsichord lessons with Maggie Cole, and continued to study 3 instruments as a triple major until her undergraduate programme. However, violin being her clear passion throughout, Agnes continued this alone into her undergraduate programme, under professor Lutsia Ibragimova.

Inspired by her involvement as a volunteer teacher in the El Sistema project in Venezuela. Agnes has been a dedicated teacher and campaigner for arts funding and support for over 10 years, working closely in her community to help young under-privileged children follow and realise their dreams.

In 2009 Agnes started teaching violin and piano to a small group of children at St Stephen’s CoE primary school in Shepherd’s Bush. In 2011 after demand for music lessons increased dramatically, she formed a complete music department of 7 different teachers, and 10 different instruments. The school now has an uptake of individual music lessons for half the students in the school.

From this Pelican Music was born.

Agnes' mission is to work with multiple schools across London and to champion quality music education for all.

Drum TEACHER

Rob is an experienced teacher, having taught drums for 15 years. He studied music at Trinity College of Music, London and then at Middlesex University; where he studied Jazz with Nikki Ilses, Stuart Hall and Martin France. As a freelance musician Rob has performed at festivals across Europe; such as the London Hyde Park Calling, the Electric Picnic Festival in Dublin, and the Seixial Jazz Festival in Portugal, most notably with Australian folk duo "Angus and Julia Stone''. He has experience recording drums in some London's top studios such as Rak and Angel studios and gigs regularly with a number of Professional bands across the UK. The Union Chapel, Ronnie Scotts, Pizza Express Dean Street, the Vortex and Cafe Oto are to name but a few of the London venues he has performed in.

Rob is passionate about teaching the Drums and as well as teaching for Pelican and has a successful private teaching practice across west London where he teaches at schools, students homes and online from his home studio. Rob's approach to learning the drums focuses heavily on getting students to read rhythms from musical notation straight away from their first lesson. He treats reading rhythms the same as learning your phonics as you would learning any other language. Children quickly remember what the basic rhythms sound like by singing them and carefully over time become fluent in singing the rhythms straight off the page. The great thing about this approach is you don't even need a pair of sticks to get started let alone a drum kit. He is experienced in teaching children who don't have access to drums at home and has gotten some of his students up to grade 1 standard who do not own a set. Rob also plays guitar, bass, and piano and will often accompany students in their lessons to give them a musical context and develop their musicianship skills further.

Lisa Sumner

Cello and Piano Teacher

Cello and Piano teacher

Lisa grew up in a musical family. Her mother was a piano teacher and she and her siblings all learnt instruments. She started the piano when she was 6 and cello when she was 10. Playing music together helped to foster a real love of chamber music. During these early years she discovered how much fun it can be to play music with family, friends and other musicians.

She joined the Merseyside Youth Orchestra at 15. After leaving school she went to the Royal Academy of Music in London to study cello with Derek Simpson and piano with Graeme Humphrey. As a student she took part in masterclasses with the renowned cellist Lynn Harrell - both as a cellist and also as an accompanist. She was awarded LRAM teaching Diplomas on both instruments, an Honours Degree and a Certificate of Advanced Studies for a 4th year on the cello. She was also awarded the John Booth Prize.

After leaving the RAM Lisa embarked on an extensive teaching career, initially in West London. She coached chamber groups and orchestras and taught in various schools -  Bute House Preparatory School, St Paul’s Girls’ School, Putney High and Lady Eleanor Holles in Hampton.

It was always her passion to get children to play music together from an early age. She directed her own Orchestral Courses primarily for juniors. She formed a Saturday Music School and these both became very popular.  During this period she was also asked to coach on the Oxford Cello School and in time became Junior Course Director from 1997 - 2002.

Her first son was born in London in 2003.  Two years later she relocated with her family to the North West and her second son was born soon after. In 2009 she was employed by St Mary’s College, Crosby to teach cello and piano and she combined this with a private teaching practice at home.

Lisa and her family moved back to London in April 2017 and began working for Pelican in September 2017.
