Leo Popplewell

Leo Popplewell is a versatile cellist specialising in chamber music and solo cello repertoire.  He studied at Clare College, Cambridge, before winning a scholarship to study with Louise Hopkins at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

An experienced recitalist, Leo’s recent performances include recitals at the Newbury Spring Festival, Orpheus and Bacchus Festival, Cambridge University Music Society series, Lake District Summer Music Festival and Highgate International Chamber Music Festival. He played as principal cellist in the National Youth Orchestra, and has also led the section of the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra under the batons of Vassily Sinaisky and Marin Alsop.

In 2017 he formed the Mithras Trio, winning first prize in the St. James Chamber Music Competition 2018 and second prize at the Intercollegiate Piano Trio Competition. He has also collaborated with the Wihan and Chilingirian Quartets, and the Frith Quartet.

He has won awards from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust and Craxton Memorial Trust.
